Scuderia Corsa rebounded from a fire on pit road and a penalty to score a seventh-place finish in the GTD class, leading the three-car Ferrari contingent in Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen. The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race was run in sizzling heat, with ambient temperatures in the mid-90s taking their toll on both competitors and machinery.

Unlucky pitstop. Scuderia Corsa’s Jeff Segal pitted under caution after the midway point, with Cooper MacNeil taking over behind the wheel of the No. 63 WeatherTech Ferrari 488 GT3. Suddenly, a brief fire after the fuel probe was withdrawn led to an extended pit stop, with MacNeil briefly jumping out of the car due to fumes in the cockpit. Remarkably, the team was able to clean up the incident in less than three minutes. “The car is OK; we got back out without losing a lap,” said Segal. “That was scary – about the worst thing that can happen in a race. I’m glad everyone was OK.”

Drive-through. Segal was called to serve a drive-through penalty at the midway pit for a pit infraction. Gunnar Jeannette later took over for MacNeil and drove all the way up to second position before his final pit stop with 52 minutes remaining. Segal then returned to the cockpit and went on to finish seventh in GTD. “It was just not our day here at The Glen, with two penalties and a fire,” MacNeil said. “No one ever gave up! The crew, drivers and engineers all dug in and clawed back. Kind of like Le Mans, we had some issues, but made our way back to a decent finish. We have another race in less than a week. We will turn the page and head to Canada.”

Car 51. After gaining positions throughout the first four hours of the race, the two other Ferrari teams both experienced problems at the four-hour mark. Ozz Negri spun in the Squadra Corse Garage Italia No. 51 Ferrari 488 GT3 after contact with the eventual overall winning Gainsco/JDC-Miller Motorsports Oreca Prototype driven by Chris Miller, leading to problems that spoiled a promising run. Daniel Sierra – who ran as high as 12th earlier in the race – eventually pitted the car started by Francesco Piovanetti with left-front damage with 28 minutes remaining. The No. 51 Ferrari eventually retired running 14th in the class after starting 16th.

Car 64. Five minutes after Negri’s incident, Frank Montecalvo cut a tire in the No. 64 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GT3, dropping the car from the lead lap. Bill Sweedler, Townsend Bell and Montecalvo went on to finish 10th, five positions better than their starting one. The WeatherTech Championship returns to action next weekend, for Sunday’s SportsCar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
