The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is no longer available in the UK as the hatchback has now been removed as one of the Italian carmakers available models, leaving it with just the Giulia and Stelvio until the new Tonale arrives in 2022.
After 11 years on sale the 5 door family hatchback, still one of the best looking cars in its class in our opinion, has received the axe and is no more. The Giulietta will also be removed from other European markets over the coming months as customers have shifted from the popular hatchback cars to SUV’s.
Speaking to Autocar in 2020, Alfa Romeo product marketing boss Fabio Migliavacca said: “The trend is to have SUVs in the C-segment, so the Tonale SUV will be the replacement for Giulietta.”
He added that Alfa Romeo is focused on ensuring that it will have comparable driving dynamics, despite being an SUV. “We don’t expect driving dynamics to be a weak point for the Tonale,” he said.
The Giulietta’s official retirement was confirmed last year, and leaves space in Alfa’s lineup for the Tonale SUV, which will sit under the Stelvio and is hoped to arrive within the next 12 months, although recently rumours arose that it’s official launch had been pushed back by concerns from Alfa Romeo’s new CEO.
“We’re boosting the level of electrification,” Alfa Romeo said of the delayed crossover. “The Tonale will be the first milestone in the future of Alfa Romeo, and we want to be on the market with the most updated electrified offer, leveraging on the Stellantis technology and know-how.”
The demise of the Giulietta might not be a complete surprise since it’s dynamics are outdated compared to rivals, the fact that Alfa Romeo will be down to just 2 models with a lengthy period until the Tonale arrives can’t be good for sales whilst it’s rival continue to offer an array of various models. We can only hope that with the recent merger of PSA with FCA creating Stellantis, that we will see a wider range of new cars worthy of the Alfa Romeo badge begin to emerge after the Tonale next year.
