A God once said, well a Rock God anyway, sang ‘You’re poison, running through my veins, I don’t want to break these chains’ and Alice Cooper – we’re not worthy! – could well have been talking about the New Abarth 595 Esseesse.
With unique features on a technical level, it is the purest expression of Carlo Abarth ‘s fighting spirit .Many say that the 695 SS of 1966, which evolved from the Fiat 500 dwarf, was the favorite creation of the demon Carlo Abarth. Compact, dynamic and, above all, with a performance that unpleasantly surprised its competitors, the 500 with the distinctive Esseesse is the ultimate expression of Abarth racing DNA.
Today, the new Abarth 595 Esseesse continues this tradition, being the version of the model that has the most extensive technical upgrades, but also an appearance that honors the rich racing heritage of the brand. Whilst the Abarth 595 might be based on the Fiat 500, with both cars being of the same blood, from the same family however much like Bart Simpson to Lisa Simpson is, where the 500 is a happy little city car, the Abarth 595 just wants to shout ‘ay caramba, lets live a little!’ or rather ‘ay caramba, viviamo un po’.
Power comes from the 1.4 T-Jet engine, in its most powerful version with 180 hp and 250Nm of torque. The same ensemble – with 160 horsepower – supplies the cars of the Formula 4 championships in Italy and Germany. The Esseesse is also equipped with the Garrett GT1446 turbine; a mechanical self-locking differential, which improves traction under difficult grip conditions and uneven terrain; Koni FSD shock absorbers on both axles and Brembo brakes with fixed aluminium calipers. Paired with a 6-speed manual transmission the Esseesse can be fitted on request with an Abarth robotised sequential transmission with shift paddles.
The pocket rocket that is the Abarth 595 is just a blast, literally, in Esseesse trim the Abarth team developed new titanium tailpipes for the Akrapovič exhaust system and these make the little Italian just a little more vocal, start the 595 Esseesse up and bury the throttle and just hear the Scorpion come alive, it makes you feel alive too.
Sure around town it can play the city car role easily enough but it’s out of town where the 595 Esseesse comes alive, twisting and turning on the country roads, even sticking to the speed limits just makes the whole driving experience fun. So is our headline right, is this a ‘Poisonous Scorpion’? We’ll let Alice Copper answer that ‘Yeah, well I don’t want to break these chains, Runnin’ deep inside my veins, Burnin’ deep inside my brain…’
Now who’s got the keys, I want to go for a drive!
