The New Maserati MC20 has been named our car of the year 2020, from the moment it was unveiled we didn’t just like it – we loved it!
The Trident brand’s new super sports car is a worthy successor to the MC12 as well as being 100% made in Modena and 100% made in Italy, it looks exactly like a sports car should and underneath its superb looks it has a new 630 horsepower V6 Nettuno engine that delivers 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 2.9 seconds and a top speed over 325 km/h, the kind of ‘Top Trump’ figures a super sports car should have.
There is no denying the MC2o is an instant ‘bedroom poster car’ but it isn’t just the looks that give it the Car of the Year title, the car features a new patented engine that has been developed, designed and built entirely in-house and uses a pre-chamber technology derived from Formula 1 engines. Nettuno, the first engine in the Italian car makers new chapter of the Trident’s history, is the MC20’s twin turbo V6, a technologic gem already awarded an international patent, which puts the MTC (Maserati Twin Combustion) technology, the ground-breaking combustion system developed in-house, onto the world’s roads.
2020 has seen the brand celebrate 106 years of history and as well as adding the Trofeo Collection to it’s road car range, the MC20 truly celebrates the brand’s history, with the MC20 the car is equipped with cutting-edge technologies that ensure maximum driving fun. These include a fully carbon fibre monocoque and a double-wishbone suspension system with active dampers, allowing the car to deliver the very best performance, while simultaneously ensuring maximum maneuverability and comfort. Another example of the MC20’s commitment to state-of-the-art technology is its frameless digital rear-view mirror, which offers markedly increased visibility for the driver.
Choosing the MC20 as our Car of the Year 2020 was no easy task, with the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (MY20) it would have been easy to have picked the V6 Turbo Super sports saloon, the Alfa Romeo Giulia remains the best sports saloon on the market in our opinion. And what of Ferrari, with the new Roma, SF90 Stradale, F8 Spider and 812 GTS the gates of Maranello have been busy this year opening with some stunning cars. Then there is the new Fiat 500e, electric car meets chic design and it is the complete city car package. Lamborghini almost crashed the Car of the Year party with the Huracan Evo Rwd Spyder, a Lamborghini many say is the choice Huracan should you have the means.
However it is the stunning MC20 that pips it, only just, it was very close but in the end there is no denying what the Maserati represents, a new chapter in the Tridents story, exciting times ahead with a very exciting car leading the charge.
