Abarth 124 rally wins the FIA R-GT Cup for the third time

With the 2nd place in the ACI Rally Monza – won last weekend – Mabellini wins the FIA R-GT cup, in practice the “world” of Gran Turismo

The Abarth 124 rally confirms itself as the queen of Gran Turismo in rallies, winning the FIA RGT Cup for the third consecutive year, this time thanks to the very young Italian Andrea Mabellini, paired with Virginia Lenzi in the Bernini Rally team car. Mabellini obtained the 2020 title thanks to the success at the Rally di Roma Capitale last July, and second place in the very difficult ACI Rally Monza, the last round of the WRC World Championship. In 2018 it was the French Raphaël Astier who won this prestigious title, in 2019 the Italian Enrico Brazzoli.

In the 2020 FIA R-GT Cup Mabellini precedes the Czech Republic driver Petr Nešetřil (Porsche 997 GT3) and the Belgian Luc Caprasse (Abarth 124 rally), tied third with the Frenchman Pierre Ragues (Alpine A110S). In fifth place another driver on an Abarth 124 rally, the Italian Roberto Gobbin who, paired with Alessandro Cervi, finished the ACI Rally Monza in 5th place in the category.

A well-deserved title, obtained with an excellent result in the very difficult ACI Rally of Monza, disputed in critical conditions, with snow, ice and a lot of mud that enhanced the qualities of the Abarth 124 rally, allowing Mabellini to aim for absolute success also in this race. The young Italian driver raced with the aim of absolutely having to finish the race in order to win the championship, but still close to success. Mabellini crowned a very positive season, which saw him win the Abarth Rally Cup as part of the FIA ERC European Championship.

Andrea Mabellini (Bernini Rally): “It was the most difficult race of my career: very difficult conditions and the obligation to finish. However, the Abarth 124 rally proved to be very robust and incredibly effective on the hardest surfaces and snow, where I was able to find the best setup thanks to the ability to adjust power delivery and traction during the test ”.

The weather also affected the last round of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth, held on the Roman circuit of Vallelunga. The heavy rain prevented the second of the three races scheduled. With the Italian Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam) already champion, in Race 1 the success went to the English Oliver Bearman (US Racing), ahead of the Italian Francesco Pizzi (Van Amersfoort Racing) and the compatriot Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing ). Thanks to this result, Pizzi confirmed the second position in the championship. Edgar then confirmed his positive day by winning Race 3, in which he preceded the Russian Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) and Gabriele Minì, who thus concluded his extraordinary season with a podium.
