Andrea Mabellini celebrates the victory of the Abarth Rally Cup 2020 at the Rally of the Canary Islands

Grand finale in the name of competition and entertainment in the Canary Islands Rally, the last round of the FIA ​​ERC European Championship, also valid for the Abarth Rally Cup.

In the last race of the Abarth Rally Cup season, the Polish team Dariusz Polonski and Lukasz Sitek won, driving the Abarth 124 rally of the Rallytechnology Team, followed by the 2020 champion Andrea Mabellini together with the co-driver Nicolò Gonella, driving the spider of the Bernini Rally team with the colors of the Napoca Rally Team.

Mabellini – already mathematically champion before the start – in the Canary Islands closed the season with an excellent performance, winning second place in the race valid for the Scorpion single-make and, thanks to third place in the ERC2 class – category that includes all-wheel drive cars with turbo engine and RGT gran turismo – closed the season by also winning the 2nd place overall in the ERC2 classification of the European Championship.

The Canary Islands Rally was heavily affected by the weather, with continuous and sudden downpours of rain that made tire choice difficult. Even in conditions favorable to all-wheel drive, the Abarth 124 rally proved to be the best performing car in the ERC2 category, winning 10 of the 17 special stages held. Polonski, after dominating the first stage, lost more than a minute in the second due to the consequences of an off the road that forced him to come back, missing the category victory by just 9 ”1.

Andrea Mabellini: “It was a very difficult weekend, but we are happy with how we played the whole championship. It was an incredible experience, in which I learned a lot. The courses of the European races were very different from each other and all the rallies were very long and demanding. I thank everyone who allowed me to race at these levels ”.

Mabellini’s 2020 season continues. In fact, next weekend, the Italian driver will be at the start of the ACI Rally of Monza, the last race of the WRC World Championship and the FIA ​​RGT Cup, in practice the world of gran turismo, in which the Italian occupies the first position on a par. points with the Belgian Jean Luc Caprasse, also on Abarth 124 rally.
