Tuscany Ferrari 1000 – The finish line was reached but not the goal
Scuderia Ferrari’s thousandth race in Formula 1, the Tuscan Grand Prix – Ferrari 1000, will be remembered in many ways. The difficulty and spectacularity of the Mugello circuit, a track owned by Ferrari that was making its debut in the World Championship, will be remembered for being the first race with the public returning to the stands, for the national anthem sung by the famous tenor international Andrea Bocelli and for the excitement before the start transmitted to all present by Mick Schumacher, who drove his father Michael’s F2004 for five laps, the most successful car in the history of the Scuderia. It will not be remembered for the results collected by Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel,
Street. When the traffic lights went out, Charles was the protagonist of a perfect shot that took him from fifth to third position after having even joined Lewis Hamilton, who was second. But when Carlos Sainz’s McLaren came into contact with Lance Stroll’s Racing Point at Turn 2 and spun. Seb, who arrived at that moment, found himself in front of the number 55 car crossed and was unable to avoid it, damaging the front wing. A little further back Kimi Räikkönen, Romain Grosjean, Pierre Gasly and Max Verstappen came into contact with the Frenchman’s AlphaTauri and the Dutchman’s Red Bull who ended up in the gravel forcing Race Direction to let the Safety Car in. When the race resumed eight laps later Charles was third, while Seb was thirteenth and last.
Second way.The second start saw Charles sprint well again and maintain third position, while Seb was able to immediately overtake Grosjean’s Haas for 12th place. Leclerc soon began to struggle to keep a good pace and was thus overtaken by several cars which led to the decision to pit on lap 22 to try a change of strategy and mount Hard tires. The same tactic was implemented with Vettel on lap 29. On lap 38 the team then decided to stop Charles again to mount a set of Medium tires on his SF1000. Shortly afterwards Lance Stroll crashed into the barriers at Arrabbiata 2, triggering a further Safety Car which, as on the previous occasion, was soon switched to a red flag suspension. It was since the 2016 Brazilian GP that such a situation did not occur. Before the stop Seb had returned to the pits to mount a set of Soft tires.
Third way. At the third start from the grid, with thirteen laps to go, Charles positioned himself on the eighth spot, while Seb started from the tenth. This time around the start of the Ferraris was not the best as Charles lost two places while Seb slipped 11th. The Monegasque quickly overtook Grosjean in pursuit of Raikkonen who in the meantime had received a five-second penalty for crossing the solid line at the entrance to the pits at a point not allowed. Vettel also managed to overtake the French driver and crossed the finish line tenth behind his teammate who, however, finished ahead of the Finnish Alfa Romeo once the time penalty was applied to the final results.
Pause. The race held at Mugello brought to the conclusion the third hat-trick of the 2020 season. Now the World Championship stops for a week: teams and drivers will compete again on September 25-27 at Sochi Autodrom, home of the Russian Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc # 16
“My start was excellent, to the point that I managed to move up to third position, but unfortunately we didn’t have the pace to keep that position and so we finished in eighth place. I tried to fight as much as possible but it wasn’t enough to defend us. A lot of things have happened in this race but even today it was clear that we have a lot of work to do to improve our performance.
The race in and of itself was fun. I was happy to have had a standing start after each interruption because it offered me the chance to fight to improve my position.
The car was quite difficult to drive today, especially on Hard tires. Towards the end, however, with the Soft, the situation improved but overall it is useless to hide that our situation at the moment is complicated. Not for this, however, we must lose heart but, on the contrary, now more than ever we must remain motivated. Is very important. I am confident that better times will come soon ”.
Sebastian Vettel # 5
“The start was not the best, but I entered turn 1 while staying inside to avoid gfuai. Then, when I got into turn 2, I saw that the McLaren had spun but I couldn’t figure out which way it would end. But then it stopped practically where it was and at that point I was like a trap and I could not avoid it.
Fortunately, with the Safety Car we were able to change the wing without wasting time re-joining the group. I would have liked to be able to take better advantage of the misadventures of others but at least I managed to stay relatively out of trouble. The positive aspect is that we managed to finish in the points, but it is clear that we cannot be happy with this result ”.
Mattia Binotto Team Principal
“A very disappointing result closes a historic weekend for Scuderia Ferrari which played its thousandth Grand Prix in Formula 1 today at the Mugello home circuit.
If yesterday, at least with Charles, we were able to return to a placement in line with expectations, today we did not have the adequate pace to allow our riders to fight with their direct rivals, suffering above all from tire degradation.
Both Charles and Sebastian did what they could considering the level of performance of the car. We are working hard to try to correct the basic defects but it is not something that can be changed in a short time and with partial updates. This does not mean that there will be no news between now and the end of the season but we must be realistic, with ourselves and with our fans ”.
