Antonio Giovinazzi: Don’t Compare Me To Charles

The new Formula 1 season might still seem a way off so soon into the New Year but for the drivers and teams the preparation is already well underway. The 2019 season will see two new drivers at the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 team, the return of fans favourite Kimi Raikkonen having left Scuderia Ferrari to return to the team he started his Formula 1 adventure with and Antonio Giovinazzi, himself promoted to take up a race seat alongside the experienced Finnish driver.

Last season all eyes where on the young Charles LeClerc at the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 team, himself rewarded with his good results by a race seat at Ferrari, however young Antonio would prefer not to have any comparisons between himself and Charles. The Italian has so far raced in just two Grand Prix having driven for the Swiss team in place of an injured Pascal Wehrlein in 2017, Giovinazzi admits he has no desire to repeat the performances of Leclerc . “I have not talked a lot with Charles about this jump, I want to concentrate on myself,” Giovinazzi said in a recent Autosport interview.

“I do not have to think about repeating Charles’s results or improving them” Giovinazzi said “My goal is to do my best. I will have a companion different from that of Charles. Everything will be different, I hope the car can be fast already in the first race in Melbourne “.

“Many drivers have proved to be fast enough for a top team like Vestappen, but in the new season it will be up to Pierre (Gasly, ed) and Charles – he added -. It’s nice to see a good pilot doing a fantastic job in a big stable. Being my first year in Formula One I will try to improve myself “.
