Now before we start, let’s remember the ground rules on our Car Of The Year, this was not a vote for the best new Italian car of 2018 nor the best Supercar of the year but the car WE had road tested in 2018.
During 2018 we have been lucky to test some pretty awesome cars, from Lamborghinis ‘Love it Or hate it’ Urus to another rocket SUV in the form of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio.
We also road tested more normal everyday modes of transport from the Fiat 500L to the new 500X and even having some fun with the Fullback truck.
It has been a fantastic fun year for us at Enzari and we look forward to more Road Tests in 2019.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia is in our opinion, without doubt the best executive sports saloon on the market, it has style, pace, drives brilliantly and every time you park up you take a glance back, just as you should if you own an Alfa Romeo. But and here’s the but, like many executive saloons after a while you would take this for granted and that’s a shame but it’s true. There’s nothing wrong with that, it proves Alfa’s got it right and the Giulia deserves to succeed because it is such a good car.
By comparison the Fiat 124 Spider is a different driving experince, two door wind in your hair motoring with fun in bucket loads. It drives and handles well, looks good and even manages to be comfortable. The simple drop top roof is a throwback to classic roadsters but taking only 2-3 seconds to put down or take up makes you wonder why an electric version would be needed. And it’s fun, yes that word again but that is the one word you would find yourself using over and over again if people ask you what it’s like.
To back the arguement up the little 124 Spider doesn’t cost a fortune to run, so you can have an Italian drop top without needing a massive bank account, happy days!
So there you have it, a narrow victory over the Giulia it may be but victory all the same. Congratulations Fiat 124 Spider you are our Car Of The Year 2018, and if you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up…
