No Green Light For Abarth 500X

The rumoured, and by some much wanted Abarth 500X seems to be condemned to be nothing more than just a prototype following reports this week.

At the recent launch of the new Fiat 500X, Nicolino Paolo, product manager of the Fiat 500X and who was involved in the prototype of the Abarth 500X, a few years ago. “In my opinion it was and still is a great idea, but you also have to look at the market situation”, he said during the introduction of the new Fiat 500X. The Fiat 500X lends itself perfectly to a sportier version of Abarth. The chassis already has a sporty set-up, ” Paolo went on to say.

It seems the Abarth 500X was a real possibility though, he continues: “In the past we have built one prototype in which we have tried different engines, including a stronger version of the 1.4 T-Jet four-cylinder turbo engines from the Abarth 595 and Abarth 695, but also the 1.8-litre from the Alfa Romeo 4C. “

“We tried to get the green light for the model, but in the end it turned out that there was no good business case and that the investments were too high for Abarth. It was simply too expensive to develop the car. “

Whilst an Abarth version of the new 500X seems not to happen, for those wanting a sportier version of the small crossover Nicolino confirmed “We will come up with a sportier-oriented version, similar to the previous Fiat 500X S-Design. It will be on the market within a year “, says Paolo.
