More on the discount later but firstly, how many of us actually make any money out of our dreams and passions? Well motoring journalist Olivia Gauch certainly has and with the smallest of motoring icons. How many product designed to be utilitarian get it so right that they become design icons and desired by people from all walks of life? Well only a few come to mind: the classic Fiat 500, the Vespa scooter, the Swiss Army knife and now I am struggling to think of any more.
Like many people. Olivia has a passion for the little Italian icon of motoring, and it’s partly because her great-grandparents were Italian and so it had always been a dream of hers to have one one day. As a motoring journalist it wasn’t until she attended the launch of the Fiat 500L, where they had some classic 500s on show, that she looked on eBay for one. In a strange coincidence there was one only 12 miles down the road, so off she went with her husband, and a day later they’d bought it. Looking at the paperwork they found out that the Italian owner had lived in Cuneo, which is where her great-grandparents were from.
Their classic Fiat 500 was used in James May’s BBC 2 television show, Cars of the People and so they decided that after that experience they’d hire it out, rather than having it just sit in the garage. In 2015 they did 3 weddings and bought another Fiat 500 to restore.
In 2016 they increased this to 13 weddings and also shot a Christmas advertising campaign for the Italian make up brand Kiko Milano. After that, there were more requests for cars from all over the UK.
2017 saw their busiest year yet, with 22 weddings, some filming for BBC’s The One Show, and with the 60th anniversary of the Fiat 500. They not only got asked to take part in a video for Fiat UK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNB-uj5fmw4&t=70s, but also got invited to the celebrations in Turin, Italy which took place on the famous Lingotto racetrack.
They also took part in the Goodwood Revival where over 100 Fiat 500s drove laps of the circuit, and were featured on ITV4’s highlights show, with the presenter Nicki Shields taking one of their cars on track. An amazing spectacle at truly unique event, which every petrol-head should attend at least once in their life.
2018 sees them just as busy with 21 weddings already booked and they’ve just done a big event for Pizza Express. Their network of Cinquecentos continues to grow with cars from Italy and South Africa.
So it is possible to make money from your passion for cars, but it takes some imagination and a lot of hard work to make it happen. But how many people have had the opportunity to drive the Goodwood Circuit or the track on the roof of the historic Lingotto Fiat factory in Turin?
