News seem’s to be doing the rounds that a new engine could be on the way for the talented Alfa Romeo Giulia. With the range topping 2.9 litre V6 powered Quadrifoglio grabbing most of the headlines, it’s easy to forget that the Giulia is available with other engine options. However, the Italian carmaker might be about to add an new one.
Bozi Tatarevic grabbed an image from Mopar Tech Authority, FCA’s OEM service site, and posted it to Twitter over the weekend. There, the Giulia is listed as having a 350 bhp 2.0-litre engine of the turbocharged variety. when asked Alfa responded by saying, “No plans for any other engines for Giulia in 2018 model year besides the exisiting one’s are planned’.
The likely scenario is any new engine will probably be launched for the 2019 model, which would coincide with a mid life tweaking for the Giulia, also of course the 2019 model will be available towards the end of 2018, so technically it could be next year.
What make’s this speculation even more interesting is that the new powertrain could combine the 280 bhp engine with a 48-volt electric system and e-assisted turbocharger to produce 350 bhp, sources have been confirmed as saying ‘This is pretty well established as happening. MY2019, 280bhp + 48V electrical system + elec. assisted turbo = ~350bhp ‘Veloce’.”
If the Giulia does get a 48-volt system, that would certainly make the likes of BMW, Audi, and Mercedes all sit up, as the German manufacturers all have such systems in production or coming up, none are found in their compact executive cars. So Alfa’s 2019MY launch will be groundbreaking.
