Ferrari confirmed at the Frankfurt Motor Show that they have no plans (for now) to develop wholly electric cars. Speaking yesterday, Michael Leiters, chief technology offer at Ferrari, said he could not imagine a fully electric Ferrari sportscar given the current limitations of the technology. “There is a need for more time, more innovation to get the same performance, and, what’s even more challenging, to get the same driving pleasure that we have today,” he told reporters. “Just think of the sound and things like that which are essential for us. For us the first step is hybridisation.”
The Italian Supercar maker launched the new Ferrari Portofino, its new entry level model that will replace the California. Named after a picturesque village on the Italian coastline, the convertible Portofino is powered by an eight-cylinder GT engine and can reach maximum speeds of over 190 miles per hour.
Ferrari plans to start deliveries of the car in Europe at the end of the first quarter and in other markets by the summer, said Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Enrico Galliera. The initial reaction boded well for sales, he added. “The reception to the car even before its official launch exceeded our expectations. Almost all the dealers have strong order books for the car already,” he added.
In the meantime, while most eyes and headlines at Frankfurt where on the new hypercar from Mercedes AMG it seems Ferrari is currently testing a Ferrari FXX K mule at the Monza Circuit. Fully camouflaged from bumper to bumper, the prototype serves as a development car for an even more hardcore Ferrari FXX K Evoluzione that should be unveiled later this year. Caught on camera by YouTube user 19Bozzy92, the FXX K Evoluzione is going all out on the track and the V12 sounds magnificent, the prototype also features a new rear spoiler and is likely getting a slight bump in performance.
