Alfa Romeo is on a bit of a roll at the moment, the Giulia has been winning accolades all over the world, including trouncing rivals BMW M3 and Mercedes AMG C Class in comparison tests thanks to its range topping Quadrifoglio. The goal now it seems is for its new SUV, the Stelvio to equally give its German rivals a bloody nose, none more so than Porsche.
Where better to take on Germany’s best? The Nürburgring of course, it’s a course of Round 2 for Alfa Romeo v Porsche. If you cast your mind back not too far, the Panamera Turbo lost the saloon crown to the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, which just happens to share its platform and its powertrain with the Stelvio version.
Oh, and since we’re talking about Alfa Romeo here, don’t expect the test drivers involved in the matter to be set back by the capricious Ring weather.
For one thing, when the infamous German track was hit by the rain, the drivers took advantage of the situation by sliding the hell out of the SUV.
Judging by the relentless assault on the Nurburgring production car record, it’s amazing how peaceful things are in the SUV arena. To be more precise, we haven’t heard of any new effort on the matter ever since Porsche introduced the Cayenne Turbo S back in January 2015.
The Cayenne managed to lap the Nordschleife in 7:59.74, beating the previous holder of the record, namely the Range Rover SVR, by a whopping 14 seconds.
We look forward to the new Alfa SUV grabbing another record, after all this is the SUV Jeremy Clarkson has recently stated as being ‘the SUV for your bedroom wall’ so should be a breeze…
